Spengler Leads Mercedes 1-2-3 at Nurburgring

Audi dominated the action on Saturday at the Nurburgring, but it was their rivals Mercedes-Benz who had a day to remember on Sunday, when Bruno Spengler led Merc's 1-2-3 finish in style. The Canadian managed a perfect start from 2nd place on the grid and overtook pole sitter Mattias Ekstrom by the first corner, securing the lead and never letting it go until the chequered flag. This was his second win of the season, after the success he recorded at Lausitz.

Scottish driver Paul di Resta had to settle for 2nd place, while the all Mercedes Benz podium was completed by Gary Paffett.

Spengler and Di Resta experienced little action on Sunday however, despite the fact that they drove quite close to each other for the majority of the race. After the final pit stop, once Spengler managed to maintain his lead, Di Resta decided not to push anymore and was happy enough with the runner-up spot.

Plenty of drivers fought for 3rd place in the race, with Jamie Green and Timo Scheider initially fighting for that spot. The reigning DTM champion made an early attempt to pass the Brit, but he ran wide and was overtaken by Paffett for 4th place.

Nevertheless, Green would not last for too long in that place, as a slow pit stop later on cost him two places. Both Paffett and Scheider overtook him and Green dropped to 5th place, after which he had to resist pressure from Mercedes' Ralf Schumacher.

Pole sitter Mattias Ekstrom's effort on Sunday was only good for 7th place, as a troubled start dropped him to that position at the very first corner. He was forced to run wide in Turn 1 of the first lap and never managed to move up the pack until the finish line. Eventually, he ended the race more than 2 seconds ahead of Maro Engel.

With this win, Spengler extended his lead in the overall classification to 16 points from Green, while Gary Paffett is placed one further point behind, in 3rd place.
