Speed Kills Ripple Effect

Speed kills, and that's a fact nobody really needs to be reminded of. But there are few those who also know that aside from killing you, speed kills countless others, on the inside. It kills their dreams, their hopes and, ultimately, their lives with you in it.

This is the center idea behind a campaign against speed currently underway in the Australian state of Victoria. Sanctioned by the Transport Accident Commission, the campaign tells the story of 19 year old Luke Robinson, who was killed on March 28 2010 in a car crash caused by speed.

The video you will see below is not about Luke himself, nor is it about the accident he was involved in. The story is about the people Luke left behind, people who he knew and people who barely heard of his existence: friends, emergency workers, colleagues, survivors of the crash, eyewitnesses and so on.

The Ripple Effect TAC campaign was set in motion by Luke's father Norm Robinson, who wrote his story to TAC and asked them to do something and stop the carnage.

"Our family and friends agreed to be in these ads because we desperately want the community to be aware of the tragic ripple effect caused by every death from speeding," Robinson said.

According to TAC data, 30 percent of all crashes in Victoria are speed-related, making speed the biggest killer on the state's roads. 121 drivers and 46 passengers have been killed in the past two and a half years.

"This campaign is aimed directly at speeding drivers to show them that it isn't just their lives that they could ruin, it also ruins the lives of their parents, mates and even their footy coach,” TAC Minister Tim Holding added.
