The CRT teams who have agreed to adopt the Magneti Marelli gear will be allowed to run a 2-day track test in Sepang, Malaysia in February. These tests will take place February 3 and 4, just prior to the official MotoGP tests open for all the teams.
Even though the spec control unit is said to become mandatory in the 2014 season, it looks like things are already on the move. The results of the tests will provide both the teams and MotoGP officials with some hands-on data, but we just know not everybody is happy with all the changes in the series.
Rumor goes that the battle for spec control units is not over yet: as riders and mechanics are still skeptical on how things are going to work on the bikes. The spec-ECU is an idea which came from Formula 1 (implemented as mandatory since 2008), and one of the skeptics is Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa, warning in 2012 that bikes are still "a big unknown" and simply jumping in the new ECU wagon might not be the best idea.
Soon we'll see some spec ECU racing and hopefully things will clear up a bit.
