You know BMW’s slogan, right? The Ultimate Driving Machine? That sounds really good but sometimes we found their cars not to live up to the expectations. This is not the case.
It’s also not in BMW’s character to refuse to hand out cars to journalists that ask for them, even if their endeavor seems crazy at first. I can’t even imagine the face of the PR Manager when he got a call in which he was informed that someone wanted an i8 to drift it in the snow.
And since the caller got what he wanted, the world is now a better place. Therefore, here’s Travis Okulski drifting the plug-in hybrid sportscar on the Lime Rock Park circuit, in some serious snow... Because, why not?
Truth be told, that silver Bimmer with its big wheels on looks absolutely dashing in the winter sun and we’re completely in love right about now... To be completely honest, we like this even more than seeing the thing drift and burn rubber on proper asphalt, especially since it’s damn near impossible.
You see, the powertrain of the i8 is a little peculiar. It is made up of an 1.5-liter 3-cylinder internal combustion plant that makes 231 HP and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque and an electric motor good for 131 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. The former powers the rear wheels while the latter the front ones.
Together they make the i8 an all-wheel drive BMW with 362 HP and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque that is incredibly good fun and can’t be drifted on the asphalt. On the snow however, it’s a little different. Check it out!
