Sporting what is arguably one of the most unusual mules in recent history - albeit still far from beating the one that the second generation of the BMW X5 (E70) had – a pre-production prototype of the upcoming smart fortwo was again spotted while doing some testing in Spain.
Featuring a camouflaged production model front end, the rest of the car is still based on a shortened and chopped Renault Twingo, with the Renault badge still visible on the rear hatch.

As you know, the new fortwo is made in collaboration between Daimler AG and the Renault-Nissan Alliance, with its bigger forfour brother also getting a French cousin in the shape of the next generation of the Renault Twingo.

The fortwo will sport a range of three-cylinder engines based on the Renault TCe 0.9 mill, with its output ranging from about 70 hp for the non-turbocharged version to about 110 hp for the turbocharged Brabus variant. Also, the cdi diesel from the current generation of the model might be dropped in favor of a full-electric version which will get the range's CO2 emissions even lower than they are now.

The production version is expected to be launched at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in March, with the longer and fourjoy-based smart forfour to arrive in September, at the Paris Motor Show.
