Skoda and Top Gear to Take the Green Car Challenge

Competing against Holden or Ford, the Australian division of Skoda announced that it will take on the Global Green Car Challenge, alongside TopGear Australia, to “prove that small can win big and that large cars can be amazingly fuel efficient without comprising on luxury and quality.”

The TopGear team will be competing on both a Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI with 125 kW (167 hp) and 350 Nm of torque and on an alcohol-fueled, one-seater, ‘Postie’ bike. The Superb is said to feature a patented TwinDoor system, which turns the car from a sedan to a liftback at the touch of a button.

The vehicle is fitted with dual-zone climate controlled air conditioning, nine airbags, Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), multi-function trip computer, MP3 auxiliary input socket, cruise control, light assistant, front fog lights with corner function, rear parking sensors with acoustic warning and optical display, chrome interior trim and a leather package for the 4-spoke multi-function steering wheel, gearshift lever and handbrake grip.

Since the rainy season is likely to start soon, other features include an umbrella holder in the left rear passenger door, with a water resistant storage space in the inner panel of the left rear door and an umbrella included. Unfortunately, the ‘Postie’ bike only has a nice raincoat available.

With a highway fuel consumption of just 5.4 litres per 100 kilometres (43.5 miles per gallon), the TopGear team will be traveling from Darwin to Adelaide in an attempt to win the trophy for Skoda Australia.
