Mopar enthusiasts know what the Six-Pack engine configuration is all about. Not so much a powerplant but a collection of three two-barrel carburetors, the Six-Pack (or 6 Barrel) option worked wonders with the 440-cu.in. (7.2-liter) RB, a big-block mill that was manufactured up until 1978. The question is, why did FCA recently file a trademark for “SIXPACK” in 2017?
Filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on September 18, 2017, the wordmark was assigned serial number 87611929 and it’s owned by FCA US LLC Limited Liability Company Delaware. The goods and services Fiat Chrysler will use “SIXPACK” for is “parts for engines for automobiles,” which made a few Mopar enthusiasts open the subject of a new engine.

An all-new V8 isn’t in the offing, with the HEMI V8 in both free-breathing and supercharged forms scheduled to live on for the foreseeable future. Even if Fiat Chrysler turns to the twin-turbo V8 currently used by the Maserati Quattroporte, calling it Six-Pack is laughable, to say the least.

There’s also hearsay about an all-new V6, which doesn’t hold water considering the 3.6-liter Pentastar is confirmed to soldier with an update. Called PUG, the new Pentastar will benefit from new heads and valve setup.

A quick look in the Mopar Performance catalog reveals what’s what with the “SIXPACK” trademark filed with the USPTO last Monday. More to the point, Fiat Chrysler is protecting the intellectual property that gives the name to the 340 Six-Pack crate engine, which develops 330 ponies and 330 lb-ft of torque.

Searching in the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s database reveals two former filings of the “SIXPACK” name. One dates back to 2004 (which is dead since the year 2009), and the other is from 2008 (live; the original registrant is Chrysler Group LLC Limited Liability Company Delaware).

For all intents and purposes, the Six-Pack isn’t coming back as an all-new engine for production vehicles such as the Dodge Charger. Full stop.
