Not just one, but a total of six Airlander 10 aircraft could provide emission-free air mobility in the extended area of the Scottish Highlands and Islands before the end of this decade, following an agreement between the manufacturer and HITRANS (The Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership).
The Airlander 10 has been in the spotlight on and off over the past few years due to its unique shape, enormous size, and promising capabilities. Starting last year, Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) has been making tremendous progress toward commercial services. In other words, the Airlander 10 is no longer just a futuristic concept but a real-world solution for green and efficient passenger transportation.

HAV’s most recent partnership paves the way for future commercial services across Scotland’s Highlands and Islands. For now, the company will focus on building a complete business case with support from HITRANS, which was established in order to improve transport for Na h-Eileanan Siar, Highland, Moray, Orkney Islands and Argyll and Bute.

Under the same agreement, the Airlander 10’s manufacturer will reserve six early production slots for the HITRANS-operated units.

If things go according to plan, six Airlander 10 aircraft will be operating in the area by the end of this decade. In geographical areas like these, the Airlander 10 can truly make a difference and revolutionize connectivity and access to important public services.

The UK-based company has been on a roll this year. In February, it announced the beginning of the Type Certification process for its flagship aircraft with the CAA (The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority), and only a month later, it confirmed its new production site.

The Airlander 10 will be manufactured at Carcroft Common near Doncaster in South Yorkshire. The production site will unfold over 50 hectares (123.5 acres) and will be equipped with state-of-the-art aerospace production technology. The new facility is set to create 1,000 green jobs in the region and is supported by the City of Doncaster Council and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.

HAV has also secured more than £1 billion from industry customers who decided to pre-order the Airlander 10. More than a green alternative, this aircraft boasts an unmatched capacity (100 passengers or 11 tons of cargo) and flexible capabilities (minimal infrastructure requirements) that make it particularly suitable for operations in remote, challenging locations. The Airlander 10 is also versatile enough for green cargo operations and even military logistics.

While the Airlander 10 is set to pave the road for high-capacity, zero-emission air transport, its successor (currently in concept form) will break the norm with unprecedented capabilities, including a double capacity compared to the Airlander 10 and a regional 2,200 km (1,367 miles) range at full capacity.

In the meantime, the Airlander 10 could enter service as soon as 2028.
