The Airlander 10, self-proclaimed as "the world's most efficient large aircraft," is getting ready to take tourism by storm – not just any tourism, but immersive expeditions to some of the most remote and hard-to-access destinations, including the Arctic region.
The accelerated development of low-emission, alternative vehicles of any kind has a lot to do with sustainable tourism. It goes beyond making existing tourism cleaner; it's about envisioning and implementing an entirely different type of tourism, where futuristic technologies help to not only cut emissions but also enhance the passenger experience overall. A new era of leisure travel will feature pilotless electric aircraft, hydrogen-electric ferries, and solar-powered catamarans, among many others that sounded like Sci-Fi just a few years ago.

This is where the Airlander 10 comes in as another sustainable option for immersive expeditions to faraway places. Many cruise operators have gradually switched to boutique experiences based on smaller, more intimate boats, and some are based entirely on this contemporary concept of intimate, immersive travel. The Airlander 10 could become an air-based counterpart to these small, green ships.

Grands Espaces is the operator that's betting on the huge, bizarre-shaped flying machine. This French eco-tourism company, founded by a famous Arctic scientist and author, decided to add this futuristic aircraft to its current fleet of small boats. The collaboration with HAV (Hybrid Air Vehicles) came in the form of an aircraft reservation agreement and has been four years in the making.

The UK-based aviation technology company is finally on the right track after several years of changes and bumps in the road, and it's ready to kick off production this year. One of the features that makes Airlander 10 particularly suitable for this type of eco-tourism is its remarkable versatility despite its gigantic size.
This large aircraft only needs minimal fixed infrastructure and was designed to take off and land from virtually any flat surface, including water and ice. This makes it a valuable asset for reaching challenging areas that are inaccessible to either conventional aircraft or boats.

It's hard to imagine what it would be like to travel to the Arctic aboard this futuristic aircraft that's in a league of its own. One thing's for sure: luxury is being gradually redefined as green and immersive.

The giant Airlander 10 was designed to carry up to 100 passengers or 11 tons of cargo. Its potential even convinced BAE Systems to look at possible defense applications for this unusual, low-emission machine.

Even though HAV is gearing up to start manufacturing the first Airlander 10 this year, it will still take a couple of years before the Airlander 10 can embark on its eco-tourism adventure. If things go as planned, Grands Espaces hopes to offer one-of-a-kind trips to the Arctic aboard this aircraft by 2028.
