The Toyota/Subaru/Scion back to basis sportscar triplets really need a convertible version to enjoy both the car’s abilities and the summer sun.
A functional convertible concept called the Toyota FT 86 Open was already released and you can see it in the video bellow, but there is something that bugs the automakers, making them rethink over manufacturing or not this superb open-top car.

The problems are represented by the weight and the space inside the car after the transformation. As you may know, chopping off a car’s top will make its body less rigid and stable on bends. This is corrected by reinforcing the shell with additional bars and girders, but it also makes the car weight more.

The other problem is that the car has to make some space for the retractible roof, which will translate into a crumbled rear passenger space and a smaller boot space.

Whether the companies will ditch the rear seats and make it a roadster or decide it will work with four seats and a longer wheelbase, it’s up to them. Until then, look at this wonderful clip with the open top concept rolling around the seaside.
