Hundreds of thousands gathered this weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed to see some of the fastest machines known to man, racing up the famous 1.16-mile Hillclimb course. You've got the best supercars, the finest touring cars and even old Formula One racers with six wheels, all aching for the title of "fastest". This year, the time attack was won by rally ace Sebastien Loeb, in his Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak car.
It is the second year in a row where Pikes Peak racing cars have been the fastest at Goodwood, In 2013, Gregory Guilvert won the title in Nick Heidfeld’s old Lola B12/60-Toyota in 45.86 seconds. However, Loeb was much faster in 2014 with a time of 44.60 seconds.
The Pikes Peak and WRC champ came close to defeating the all-time Goodwood record. However, Nick Heindfeld's record from 1999 still stands firm at 41.6 seconds.
As you can see in the video, it's fair to say the 875 hp Peugeot is a monster on the track due to its massive downforce advantage and huge power. It was also designed from the start to race uphill, so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised it makes short work of Goodwood, especially with a nine-time WRC winner at the wheel. Loeb said the gearing on the car was set up wrong for this short circuit, but he still managed to stay well ahead of the nearest competitor, grand prix driver Michael Bartels in the Maserati MC12 ‘Goodwood Cent 100’.
