Last time we talked about the Rolls-Royce SUV, the company wasn’t sure if it actually wanted to come up with such a proposal. The latest report on the matter indicates that the Brits still haven’t given the project the green light, but their designers are playing with the idea.
Rolls-Royce design chief Giles Taylor recently told autocar that his team is currently “sketching to assess the viability of the concept. We are not yet grappling with three dimensions and proportions.”
As we found out during our Rolls-Royce Ghost review, the car isn’t exactly afraid to step off the road. In this respect, we are told to expect a rather capable proposal, should the project become a production reality.
“I’m interested in function and functionality. I’m looking to create a properly functional vehicle – a shooting brake, not a crossover with a sloping roof. A proper SUV,” Taylor added.
The aforementioned source states Rolls-Royce should deliver their SUV in late 2017. Still, given the infancy state of the project, that seems a little ambitious.
As expected, the SUV will be closer to the Ghost than to the Phantom, so we’re expecting the kind of ultra luxurious but still down to Earth attitude behind the wheel. Still, we are talking about the next-generation Ghost here. Thus, BMW is expected to develop a new platform for this. Expect aluminum and perhaps carbon fiber reinforced polymer to be present in hefty quantities.
Bentley and Rolls-Royce do not actually share all that many customers and yet we can’t help but remind you Bentley’s SUV is on track for a 2016 launch. Just saying...
