Rolls-Royce Considering Electric Power Once Again

Just when we thought Rolls-Royce would put the electric propulsion idea in an ice box for a while, the company seems to bring this back into the headlines.
Richard Collar, Head of Bespoke Sales and Marketing for Rolls-Royce, recently told Auto Express the British automaker could launch an EV in the near future.

Like we said, this comes as a rather surprising piece of news if we are to consider Rolls-Royce’s previous attempts at offering electric propulsion. Back in 2011, they came up with the 102EX electric Phantom, the one you see pictured above.

This was a concept vehicle and Rolls-Royce took it for a tour around the world. The company received poor feedback, as its customers were not interested in making any compromises. It all made sense, since the limited range and charging possibilities aren’t exactly something you want to live with when you acquire such a luxurious vehicle.

Considering all this, we find it rather strange that Collar told the aforementioned source a bit of a different story “We took their feedback very seriously and all our customers loved it. The electric powertrain is something very true to Rolls Royce, it’s effortless, there’s huge amounts of torque and it is perfectly quiet.”

The executive did mention their customers do not accept compromises, adding that carmakers such as Tesla have proven you can fight against range anxiety through superior battery technology. Once again, we beg to differ, since we managed to cover less than 200 miles (320 km) on full charge during our Tesla Model S P85 review.

The electric topic comes after Rolls-Royce made it clear it will offer hybrid. Earlier this year, Rolls-Royce CEO, Torsten Muller-Otvos, explained plug-in hybrids would arrive within the following two years.
