We all know that the Rivian R1T is one capable pickup truck. Impressive output, acceleration, speed, load and towing capacity. But the specs sheet is nothing when you see the model in action. A video surfaced online showing the vehicle pulling a heavy truck out of a ditch.
It looks like a walk in the park. Literally. The Rivian R1T pulls back a heavy truck that was stuck in a ditch in what seems to be a construction site. At the beginning of the video, the pickup truck shows that it puts in some effort and even seems to stall at some point. But once the truck shows up from around the corner, we can all understand why. It wouldn’t be easy for a truck to pull a truck of its own size. But the Rivian R1T does it.

A worker wearing a safety vest shows up trying to guide the Rivian through the task. But the driver seems to know what they are doing, as if this was not the first time they had to come to the rescue.

And this is surely not the first time a Rivian driver does this. Back in February, an R1T pickup truck saved the day by pulling a semi-trailer back to the road after it slid off a highway in Utah, due to the icy surface and low visibility. The area had been hit by snow and freezing at the time.

The Rivian owner did not think twice. He just hooked up a recovery kit and, after the first attempt, which failed, he repositioned the R1T and pulled the semi back to the tarmac. The semi reportedly weighed around 38,000 pounds (17,237 kilograms). That is a lot to pull even for an R1T, but it did it.

The electric Rivian pickup truck has a maximum towing capacity of 11,000 pounds (4,990 kilograms), which is more than three times less than what it actually pulled. That ability is always tested and the figures recorded in conditions exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) on a desert road.

Such conditions are required by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) as the standard procedure for determining the tow rating of a vehicle. But testing it on an icy surface in freezing cold temperatures was never involved. But as previously mentioned, the spec sheet is nothing when the R1T starts to pull. We would not be surprised if the American startup would choose to update those figures soon.

The R1T  can also carry a weight of up to 1,760 pounds (798 kilograms), passengers and cargo included. But as we know Rivian, that ability might be underestimated as well.

The quad-motor version is indeed one hell of a pickup truck. It comes with 835 horsepower and some impressive torque: 908 pound-feet (1,231 Nm). The semi trailer truck driver must have felt every single pound foot pulling his big rig out of the predicament.

The story of the impressive numbers goes on, as the quad-motor Rivian R1T accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (0-97 kph) in just 3.2 seconds on its way to a top speed electronically limited to 110 mph (180 kph). Many vehicles would have probably run away with just about the same speed when seeing the semi off the road. There was not much that the drivers could do but send their regards to the driver. Or the usual "You can’t park there, Sir!"
