The Rivian configurator has been updated, and the Max Pack is finally here. The Rivian R1T and R1S are getting the biggest battery and, subsequently, a better range. The new configuration will be available on both 2023 and 2024 model year Rivians.
Rivian's long-delayed Max battery pack is finally going into production. Late last year, the California-based startup announced that they would quit offering the version that they originally intended to send to the market: a high-performance version with a quad-motor powertrain, delivering 835 horsepower and sporting the biggest battery pack. The top-of-the-line version is yet to be announced.

For the moment, the new battery pack is available for the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV that sport the dual-motor setup. It is a unit with a gross capacity of 180 kWh. The Rivian SUV will get an EPA-estimated range of 410 miles (660 kilometers), which is up from 352 miles (566 kilometers). Meanwhile, the R1T will be able to drive as far as 400 miles (643.7 kilometers) before it needs to be plugged in again.

There is no change in range for the Dual-Motor Performance versions of both the SUV and pickup truck. Rivian claims that the new battery makes the R1S the longest-range seven-passenger electric SUV currently on the market, while the www.autoevolution.com/cars/rivian-r1t-2021.html#aeng_rivian-r1t-2021-105-kwhR1T is tagged similarly in the electric pickup truck segment. The R1S thus dethrones the seven-seat Tesla Model X, which is able to cover 348 miles (560 kilometers) on a single charge.

Those who want to order a Rivian model with the Max battery pack must know that they can do it for an extra $16,000, added to the price of the vehicle. Pricing for the R1T with the Max Pack battery starts at $90,800, while the R1S with the same battery starts at $95,800. Both prices include the $1,800 destination charge. The first customers will be getting the new battery option later this fall.

Customers can start ordering the R1S and R1T with the Max battery pack starting today, as the Rivian configurator has already been updated. Deliveries of the pickup truck and of the SUV should kick off later this fall.

Until now, Rivian would only roll out the Dual-Motor R1T with the Standard pack, which brings 270 miles (435 kilometers) of projected range, the Quad-Motor with an EPA-estimated 328-mile (528-kilometer) range, the Dual-Motor, and the Performance Dual-Motor versions with 352 miles (566 kilometers) of range.

Meanwhile, the R1S SUV has so far been available with the Standard pack with two electric motors, which is capable of driving as far as 260 miles (418 kilometers). Upper in the range, there is the Large pack with 321 miles (517 kilometers) on the Quad-Motor variant and the Dual-Motor and Performance Dual-Motor with 352 miles.
