After the Taurus, Explorer, Expedition, and Transit, the Ford Police Interceptor range welcomes a new member in the form of the 2016 Ford F-150 Special Service Vehicle. Indeed, this is one hell of a pickup truck, the variety no one wishes to see in the rearview mirror.
A police-grade F-150 was bound to happen, though. After all, law enforcement requires the most capable and the toughest machines for this line of work. Available in XL trim, the 2016 Ford F-150 Special Service Vehicle comes in two configurations: SuperCrew (as in four full-size doors) or SuperCab (as in two full-size doors and two suicide doors).

In order to meet the rigorous needs of the men in blue, this toughened-up F-150 workhorse employs a high-output 240-amp alternator instead of a stock unit. The 40/20/40 rear seats of the standard model are replaced with 40/blank/40 seats, with the center section deleted to create more space. "Many officers need the extra space F-150 Special Service Vehicle offers," notes Stephen Tyler, Ford police marketing manager.

In a similar fashion to the civilian F-150, FoMoCo offers the F-150 Special Service Vehicle with 4x2 or 4x4 and with a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 or a force-fed 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. Because law enforcement can get messy from time to time, the 2016 Ford F-150 Special Service Vehicle replaces the regular carpeting with easy-to-clean vinyl flooring. Of course, the rear seat is swapped out for a vinyl bench for a quick and effortless hose down.

"We offer a whole family of police vehicles," commented Arie Groeneveld, the chief program engineer for police vehicles at the Blue Oval. "Our lineup aims to fulfill the unique needs of law enforcement officers, and our F-150 Special Service Vehicle is an extension of that offering. This vehicle definitely lives up to its Built Ford Tough reputation."
