Renault to Build Cars in China With Dongfeng

It’s official. Renault has just agreed to a joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Co. in order to build sport utility vehicles . It seems that this Dongfeng-Renault joint venture implies a new manufacturing plant situated in the capital of the Hubei province, Wuhan, and will have a production capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year.
Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Renault, and Xu Ping, Chairman of Dongfeng Motor hope to have the cars on the market in 2016 as well as double the plant’s production capacity in the future. It is quite an impressive project as the investment totals 7.76 billion CNY (€870 Million) and will lead to the creation of 2,000 new jobs.

Concerning the vehicles, DRAC plans to begin with a new range of crossover cars under the Renault brand. Afterwards, both partners will introduce a range of products under a local brand.

Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO of Renault: “Dongfeng and Renault, as parent companies of DRAC, have been closely working together to ensure the future sucess of DRAC. Our partnership agreement is part of a long term strategy. The challenge is big and we are ready for it.”
At the same time Xu Ping, DFG chairman, went on to say: “The launching of the Dongfeng Renault project symbolizes the start of a comprehensive cooperation between DFG and the Renault-Nissan Alliance. The project is a creative endeavor and practice in business model under economical globalization trends.

This shows that they have thought things through and discussed what advantages can each bring to the table in order to establish a win-win cooperation.
