Known internally as the BFB, the Renault Megane IV one of the upcoming hot projects from the world of French cars. Using a new modular platform, the same one employed by the Laguna sedan's successor, this compact hatchback has a tough job to do.
That's because the compact segment is now filled to the brim with attractive models. Some have gone for a more premium approach like the Golf, while others offer back-to-basic features like the Skoda Rapid.

The Megane could share many components with the Nissan Pulsar, but the design and the finer details of the powertrain will be French. For example, Renault is never going to use the CVT gearbox, not when it's worked so hard to develop the EDC twin-clutch unit. It's already being used by one Megane III version, the 1.2 TCe, but pretty soon most of the powertrains available will offer it.

Speaking of powertrains, we expect the Megane to be lighter, thus making better use of the 1.6 TCe turbocharged petrol engine, of which there should be two versions, offering 160 or 200 PS.

From the fact that no Megane or Laguna prototype has been seen with two exhaust pipes, we assume that the engine range has been completely downsized, just like in the case of the Astra Astra. You probably won't see anything bigger than a 1.6L, except the Megane RS, but some engines will be twin-turbocharged.

These photos were taken by amateur car spotters in France and posted on the Auto Plus forum. Interestingly, two of the photos were shot near the Renault Sandouville factory, where only the Laguna, Espace and Trafic are built. Could this mean another model will be added to the line because so many parts are shared with the Laguna?

The rest of the photos, the ones with an urban setting, were shot in Paris on the famous Alexandre the 3rd bridge.

What strikes us is how much the Megane IV looks like the Eolab concept from last year's Paris Motor Show, the one that was supposed to consume only 1 liter of fuel per 100 kilometers. Recently, one Renault official said the production version of the Eolab was ready for production, and while we presumed he meant the hybrid, he could have actually made a joke and referred to the Megane. Yes, we know that it sounds strange, but Renault officials have been playing all sorts of shenanigans with the media.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
