A Renault hatchback or estate is the last thing you'd expect to see being driven in Japan, one of the biggest car exporters in the world. And yet French cars are becoming ever-more popular, which has encouraged Renault to launch two new models, the Megane GT220 hatchback and estate.
Both cars have the updated look of the 2014 Megane facelift, featuring a large diamond badge and V-shaped upper grille, as well as nicer interiors. These GT220s are high-spec cars with gran tourer attributed and are powered by big 2-liter turbo engines, making 220 PS at 5,500rpm and 340 Nm of torque at 2,400rpm.

Offered exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission, the Megane GT220 models are rather expensive. For the 5-door hatch, Renault Japan is asking 3,179,000 yen (€23,000), while the more practical and bigger estate is 3,279,000 yen (€23,700).

Their interiors have distinct touches of sportiness thanks to the Renaultsport division. They include a red stripe across the dash, leather steering wheel and gearshifter and partial leather seats with GT logos in the headrests.

This is the perfect car for somebody who wants a European car with a sporty suspension and 2-liter turbo engine. Of course, that's what the Japanese want, what's wrong with the Subaru Levorg 2.0GT?
