Remy Launches Electric Motor for Hybrids, EVs

American supplier Remy international announced today it has created what may very well be among the first of its type suitable for both electric vehicles and hybrids. The motor, dubbed HVH250, has its roots in Remy's High Voltage Hairpin technology which, the company says, offers the highest power density and torque available today.

Still, the Remy takes pride not in the motor itself, but in the fact that it is a standardized unit. The torque and power density translate into increased range in all electric mode, while the thermal performance of the motor allows for the elimination of secondary cooling loops.

"The premium cost associated with hybrid vehicles is a major factor affecting hybrid adoption in the U.S. The highly engineered components have been produced in low volumes, resulting in a higher per unit cost. Remy's standardized motor platform will allow our customers to use our superior technology and high volume manufacturing capabilities in their vehicles," John Weber, Remy CEO said in a release.

And that's not all. According to Weber, the supplier has already secured no less than six contracts for the motor, with both American and European car manufacturers. Still, he did not name any of the respective parties.

"Our belief is that within five years, this will be a $500 million business for us,” Weber was quoted as saying by Autonews.

Production of the new motor will begin in Mexico, but will gradually be transfered to the US. The manufacturing capability allows for some 100,000 units to be build each year.
