As of November 30, 2023, four years after the much-hyped and occasionally much-ridiculed first public showing of the Cybertruck, there are 12 production series Cybertrucks on public roads. This is how many e-trucks were delivered during Tesla's Delivery Event – and at least one of them went to a millionaire.
Alexis Ohanian, the man who founded Reddit before branching out into investment and the husband of tennis ace Serena Williams, was one of the lucky dozen men to take home a Cybertruck after the event. His truck is actually the third to leave the factory in Austin, Texas, and comes branded accordingly, with a three-headed wolf logo for Beast Mode and a separate etching that reads Founders Edition.
Ohanian's Cybertruck is number 003, as he confirmed himself on social media, so he was on hand at the event to take delivery from Elon Musk himself. Afterward, Ohanian drove the truck back home to Florida, documenting a part of the trip for his social media followers.
This wasn't about bragging, either. The Cybertruck is arguably one of the most anticipated releases of recent years on the auto market, so people will want to know what it's like from someone outside of the company who isn't paid to say only nice things.
In a lengthier video posted to X (formerly Twitter), Ohanian explains how he came to be the lucky owner of a Founders unit, and if you guessed his status had anything to do with it, you're right. Ohanian already had a Model X when he placed a reservation for a Cybertruck, so he's what you might call a Tesla regular. But then, one day, he got a call asking if he'd like to take delivery of a Cybertruck earlier, which he answered in the positive.
He jumped the line to get the Founders Edition because he's famous and rich, but only because someone from Tesla reached out to him first. Still, he was so psyched that he didn't even bother to see if what he got was a dual- or a triple-motor.
His first impression of the Cybertruck is that despite how heavy it looks (and is), it drives smoothly, not unlike the Model X. The similarity extends into the cabin, which feels spacious and modern, and very comfortable.
Ohanian praises the Cybertruck for feeling safe and being easy to operate, and Musk for delivering a truck that feels like a tank but in a very cool and futuristic way. He admits that using a display instead of the lateral mirrors takes some getting used to, and he concedes that he was wrong in his initial appreciation of the yoke because drive-by-wire makes its use much easier.
Ohanian wasn't paid to drive and review the Cybertruck, even though he sounds like it. We have a feeling more glowing reviews like his are coming, and they'll be limited only by the number of trucks available. The most affordable version of the Cybertruck is coming in 2025, which is probably when the floodgates of positive reviews will open.
