It’s been a good year for the racing efforts of German carmaker Volkswagen, which proved its worth in the electric segment of the market with the ID R Pikes Peak.
Back in June, in the hands of Porsche factory driver Romain Dumas, the car purpose-built to mark Volkswagen’s return to the Peak following a 30-years break managed to defeat all expectations.

The all-electric racer clocked a time of 7:57:148 minutes on the world famous climb, more than a minute faster than the electric car time achieved by Rhys Millen back in 2016 and fast enough to set the race’s new all-time record, 16 seconds faster than the 2013 time set by Sébastien Loeb.

Now that the car has made it into the history books, Volkswagen is displaying it at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles starting this week and until February 1. The car will be on site outside the Mullin Design Studio prior to the opening of the future-of-mobility exhibit Driving Toward Tomorrow.

“We are excited for members of the public to have a chance to see the record-breaking electric vehicle while it is on display, especially as it leads into the Petersen’s future-of-mobility exhibition,” said in a statement Derrick Hatami, Volkswagen of America vice-president.

To be able to set the record on the Pikes Peak, the ID R had to use some state-of-the-art technology.

The car is powered by two electric motors that give it 680 horsepower and torque rated at 650 Nm. That’s enough to boost the machine from naught to sixty-two faster than Formula 1 and Formula E cars, in only 2.25 seconds.

Including its battery cells, the I.D. R Pikes Peak weighs less than 1,100 kilograms (2,425 lbs.), allowing for an excellent power-to-weight ratio.

The design and tech seen in this car will form the basis of design for future Volkswagen road vehicles, which will be launched starting in 2020.
