A classic Mercedes-Benz 300SL, also known as the Gullwing, was recently wrecked by a mechanic during a test drive in Baden-Wuttenberg, Germany.
While we hate to break such awful news, an example of the famed Mercedes-Benz became damage goods worth of about $830,000 (€650,000) after it was totaled by the same 26-year-old mechanic that worked on it.
According to German newspaper Spiegel, this unfortunate accident happened when a technician that (still?) works for Mechatronics, which is a vintage Mercedes-Benz specialist restorer, took the vehicle for a spin, taking his 19-year-old apprentice with him.
It seems that the driver pushed the gas pedal a little too close to the metal, lost control of the vehicle and rolled the rare and highly expensive Gullwing to a damage case of almost $1 million. Fortunately, at least for the owner, the garage is insured and the repairs will be covered.
The Mercedes-Benz 300SL was built from 1954 through 1963 in only 3,258 examples, of which 1,400 were Gullwing coupes. Auction prices for these models range between $1 million and $4.6 million (€780,000 to €3.6 million).
