At a recent Gooding & Company auction, a handsome little number has managed to fetch a sum that impresses even us. This well restored 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing has changed hands for the princely sum of $4.62 million.
One of the unique factors that contributed to this staggering price tag is the fact that this is one of only 29 29 Alloy 300SLs ever built. Of course, it doesn’t hurt either that it’s in perfect condition and looks ready for the museum. Still, 300s in this sort of condition are very rarely on sale, so a bidding war ensued.
Making the price fetched seem even more impressive is the fact that another king of million-dolar auctions, a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider, sold for a less pricy but still impressive $3,905,000 at the same auction.
