Rare 1980 BMW M1 Offered for Sale on eBay

The BMW badge is already one of the most desirable on the road, but add a little “M” and a bit of collector’s value and you have the recipe for something very special. This is the M1, BMW’s first (and only, until the i8 arrives) mid-engined sportscar.

So how did a rarity like this ever come into existence? Well, back in the late 70s, the Bavarians needed something to take on the mighty Porsches in motorsport, so they came up with this, the M1.

This is one truly amazing BMW, as Lamborghini had a say in the design and engineering (and it shows), plus only a bit over 400 were made (this is how many the Bavarians had to make so they could make it a race car). However, the M1 is most important because it brought the straight-six engine into the mix.

This particular car is in immaculate condition and is up for grabs on eBay. Finished in classic red and sporting a black interior, the car has only covered 4,418 kilometers or 2,747 miles since it left the Bavarian automaker’s factory some 31 years ago. It comes with a mid-mounted naturally aspirated 3.5-liter straight-six delivering 277-horses, and hooked up to a five-speed manual gearbox. In its glory days, the M1 could reach a top speed of 260 km/h or 162 mph.

“Garaged for all of its life and pampered in Europe specifically in a German private residence and recently imported after its 25 year minimum age requirement in the US was surpassed,” the seller says.

At the time we wrote this article, the highest bid on the car was $156,101 (reserve not met yet), and we aren’t surprised in the least. Any BMW fan who has the money would jump at the chance to own a sportcar like this.
