The motorcycle industry is a very dynamic one, with a lot of things happening almost on a daily basis. Yet it's not every day that we get to hear news about a new kind of motorcycle wheel being released, a piece of hardware that is described by its makers, with no trace of modesty, as "a new chapter in motorcycle engineering."

The statement belongs to wheel maker Dymag, a major player in this side of the industry since 1974. The company partnered for the new wheels with customizer Roland Sands Design and says it worked on the design for two years now as part of what is the "most comprehensive moto development program yet."

The products will be known from now on as the Sector Race wheels. Not all the details about them have been shared, but we do know they are meant for use on bikes that move either on the road or on the track, and come with sleek spokes, milled I beams, and cush drive.

Most importantly, Sector Race are "tailor-made for individual bike applications," making them more bespoke than series production.

Dymag says the new design will be available in many sizes, starting with the 17-inch diameter ones that will hit the market first. In the coming months the range will grow to include significantly more options, including for use in heavyweight cruisers.

To make sure everybody in the market for new wheels understands what the Sector Race is all about, Dymag will deploy them first on the track, on a BMW S 1000 RR race motorcycle. And not just any S 1000 RR, but the one ridden by English professional motorcycle racer Peter Hickman.

The 37-year-old will climb on the back of his bike on May 6 to take part in the North West 200 race scheduled to take place in the Portstewart, Portrush, and Coleraine regions of Northern Ireland.

North West 200 is considered Northern Ireland's largest outdoor sporting event, with some 150,000 people going to see the biggest names in motorsport do what they do best in a week filled with adrenaline.

Back to the Sector Race wheels, Dymag does not say how much they cost. We are told, though, that the first customers are to expect deliveries sometime in July. Pre-orders can already be placed for the ones sized 17 inches.

As for the BMW that will wear them first, the S 1000 RR is described by its maker as the superbike of superlatives. Packing a 999cc engine in its frame, the bike is capable of rushing down the track with the power of 205 horsepower and 83 lb-ft of torque, which is more than enough to ensure an acceleration time from standstill to 62 mph in 3.1 seconds.

It remains to be seen how the new Dymags impact the ride's performance levels and whether they live up to the hype.
