Q1 2024 Sales Report: Ford F-Series Is America's Favorite Large Truck Once Again

Not surprising anyone, Ford continues to dominate America's full-size truck segment. During the past quarter, Dearborn's favorite son delivered 152,943 units of the F-Series, plus 3,268 heavy trucks. But compared to the first quarter of 2023, both of these large truck lines dropped. By how much?
The numbers for Q1 2023 are 170,377 and 4,045 units, respectively, resulting in 10.2 and 19.2 percent drops. Of the 152,943 pickups mentioned earlier, the F-150 Lightning accounted for 7,743 deliveries, or 80.4 percent better than the 4,291 sales reported in the first quarter of last year.

In overall terms, however, General Motors moved a few more trucks. The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra in light-, heavy-, and medium-duty flavors clocked 198,584 sales, including 1,061 examples of the rather pricey Silverado EV. Split between the Silverado and Sierra lines, make that 129,987 and 68,597 deliveries, respectively.

Both Silverado and Sierra improved from Q1 2023, but only just. Regarding the Hummer EV, which is sold under the GMC brand, the biggest of the Detroit Big Three reported 1,668 deliveries. Similar to the Tesla Model 3/Y and Model S/X, the Detroit-based automaker doesn't break down total Hummer EV sales into Hummer EV and Hummer EV SUV components. Alas, it's not clear how many pickup truck-bodied Hummer EVs were delivered.

Next up, the Ram P/U (comprises light-duty and heavy-duty lines) moved 89,417 units during the first quarter of 2024. Otherwise put, it's 15 percent worse than the 105,350 trucks delivered from January 2023 through March 2023. There is no Ram 1500 REV and Ram 1500 Ramcharger to speak of in the Auburn Hills-based automaker's sales report. The all-electric REV is coming in the fourth quarter of 2024, whereas the range-extender Ramcharger will hit dealer lots in the first half of 2025.

Toyota Motor North America is represented by the Tundra in the full-size truck segment. Exclusively V6, the third-generation Tundra sold 36,215 during the quarter as opposed to 27,651 last year. Of those, i-FORCE MAX – a.k.a. the hybrid powertrain – accounted for 12,015 units compared to 6,989.

The final entry is the soon-to-be-discontinued Titan, which moved a meager 4,145 examples or 2.6 percent more compared to the 4,038 reported in Q1 2023. Scheduled to end production sometime during the summer, the Titan may not get a replacement. Nissan does not comment on future products, but we do know what's in the offing for the Canton assembly plant. As per the Yokohama-based automaker, two all-electric vehicles will be assembled in Canton beginning late 2026, namely zero-emission sedans from the Nissan and Infiniti brands.

There is talk of a zero-emission truck from Nissan as well, but due to a slowdown in demand for electric vehicles in the United States and on a global level, the hearsay might border on wishful thinking. On the other hand, pretty much every automaker is dropping billions into EVs and battery tech due to increasingly stringent CAFE regulations.

Following the Titan's demise, Nissan will be left with a single truck in the US, that being the mid-sized Frontier. During the first three months of the year, the Frontier sold 19,744 units, putting it right behind the Toyota Tacoma (21,558 units).
