As far as searching for revolutionary solutions in transportation, PSA Peugeot-Citroen is not the first company which springs to mind. You may think of Toyota with their hybrids, or Nissan with the all-electric Leaf, but not PSA.
Regardless of the fact that they sell/used to sell, depending on where you live, rebadged versions of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, as their own, the French group's contribution to the world of green cars is limited.
However, they seem really pleased about their new Hybrid Air powertrain, which promises to dramatically cut down on fuel consumption and emissions, especially in town.
We currently know just as much as they are showing in the rather vague presentation video, and Peugeot themselves are refusing to comment on the details of the system, saying just that if it were to be installed in small cars, like the Peugeot 208, it would cut consumption down to 2.9 l/100km or 81 US mpg/ 97.4 UK mpg.
Furthermore, in town driving, cars fitted with the system would run on Air for 60% to 80% of the time. According to Peugeot, the system offers three driving modes: gasoline only, air and gas, and just air.
It all sounds very promising, and the people at Peugeot were keen to point out that they will be debuting the system in a production car, in the B-segment, in 2016. It has probably been designed to work with the group's new platform, the EMP2.
