Prost Admits Renault Job Depends on Strategy

Only minutes before the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) meeting in Paris today, quadruple Formula One champion Alain Prost hinted that his potential involvement in Renault's F1 team will depend on the French manufacturer's future strategy inside the sport.

While the FIA might resolve that equation for Renault, as it might expel the French manufacturer from the sport, the Enstone based team are hoping for clemency from the members of the council. Renault have already issued a statement last week, in which they announced they will not dispute the race-fixing charges made by the FIA.

According to some sources, Renault are likely to face a $50 million penalty and expulsion from this year's constructors' standings if found guilty in the crash-gate.

As shown in a column written by Sunday Times' Martin Brundle – also a former F1 driver – Renault might also be handed an easier penalty should they convince the WMSC members that they'll bring in a “new team principal of perceived integrity.”

And that's where Alain Prost steps in, as the 54-year old Frenchman is one of the most appreciated characters in Formula One, despite being out of the sport for several years.

It depends completely on the project. At the moment it's difficult to talk about it. The situation is very complicated. Let's wait and see,” said Prost in an interview with French daily Sud-Ouest.

The whole of my career, I think I was working with integrity and F1 desperately needs to regain some morality,” added Prost, who also pointed out that team bosses should never be allowed to manage young drivers at the same time, in Formula One. According to the Frenchman, Piquet being managed by Briatore was something that put an extra amount of pressure on the Brazilian, when deciding to go ahead with the race-fixing plan.
