Porsche Unwraps Boxster E Electric Prototype

In what we can only be described as uncharacteristically discrete fashion, Porsche has introduced the Boxster E, an all-electric prototype version of the car which will begin testing this year in order to determine the practicality of a full electric roadster model for the road. "The electrical mobility is a central challenge of the coming years and the engineers at Porsche would like to contribute with the usual excellence of them to be resolved. The Boxster E will help us as mobile laboratories in solving the practical problems of electric vehicles the way that our customers expect, " said Porsche CEO Matthias Müller at the launch of the Boxster E. Powering the Porsche Boxster E is a pair of electric motors that provide a combined 180 kW (241 hp), which is comparable with the standard petrol-burner. The juice for the motors comes from an on-board battery pack that develops 29 kWh. Although official figures have not been released, Porsche believes performance figures will be similar to those of a more traditional Boxster S. At this point in time, the German carmaker has not revealed the electric car’s range, nor has it confirmed if the Porsche Boxster E will go into production or if it will be available for lease like other cars of this kind. According to CarSession, there is a strong possibility that the Stuttgart manufacturer is just teasing us before completely reveals the car in Geneva next month. autoevolution will be attending the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
