Next Ford GT Comes With 600 hp Hybrid Powerplant

No other car in the Ford stable gets fans more fired up than the GT, so naturally rumors surrounding the future generation are getting thicker and thicker. According to a recent Auto Express article, the next model could actually use a hybrid powerplant.

Four-wheel drive could also be used in order to send the power from the electric motors to the front axle. This layout would by very similar to that used by the Porsche 918 Spyder and 911 GT3 R Hybrid. A conventional supercharged V8, probably in the form of a 5.4-liter, would send about 500 horsepower to the rear axle, while we can expect an extra 100 hp from the electric drive. The only question that remains is if die-hard fans of the GT will like such a car, which seems to go against the grain of the original rear-wheel drive model.

With a total output of around 600 hp, the American supercar would be a match for the likes of the McLaren MP4-12C, Lamborghini Gallardo and Ferrari 458 Italia. However, by the time it’s ready for production, those cars could receive a performance boost. Another problem we foresee is the high cost of developing the technology for only one performance model.

According to Auto Express, the new car will be technologically advanced, and will offer an all-aluminum chassis and composite body panels. This would cut as much as 200 kg (440 lbs) off the weight of the current car. Styling will take a completely new direction in order to differentiate it from the 2005 GT. The model will most likely abandon its retro looks in favor of sharper, more modern lines.
