Generally speaking, there is no excuse when a driver rear ends another car – he or she is either following too close or just isn’t paying attention to the road. But as easy as it is for drivers to be distracted in their cars these days, you have to be very distracted to miss seeing an ultra-rare, half-million-dollar supercar stopped in front of you.
Such is the situation a Tucson, AZ police officer found himself in last October when he accidently rear ended a 2004 Porsche Carrera GT with his patrol car. The report from the Arizona Daily Star doesn’t indicate how fast the officer was driving, but with damage limited to the Porsche’s taillight, exhaust and rear bumper, chances are he wasn’t driving too fast.

On most cars, this type of damage might cost a few thousand dollars, but in the case of a $369,000 Carrera GT, a small fender bender can cost tens of thousands of dollars. In this instance, the minor accident will set the city back almost $44,000. Why so much? For starters, the rear bumper is constructed of carbon fiber, while the rear portion of the exhaust uses steel and nickel. And we’re sure there aren’t too many Carrera GT taillights sitting around at junkyards or even Porsche dealerships.

The Tucson City Council had to vote on whether or not to pay the repair bill (likely due to its unique nature and high price), but it did vote unanimously to cover the repair expenses. Now we understand that accidents happen so we hope the officer didn’t get in too much trouble over this ordeal, but we also hope he learned to pay closer attention while driving.
