Porsche 991 GT3 RS and 997 GT3 RS Battle on Nurburgring, Casualties: One Gearbox

Today will go down in Nurburgring history as the Porsche 911 day, with Zuffenhausen finally dropping the bomb, namely announcing that the 2018 GT2 RS has set a new Green Hell production car lap record.

To be more precise, the Rennsport Neunelfer managed to complete the Nordschleife task in 6:47.03, which, for instance, makes it a full ten seconds quicker than the all might 918 Spyder that set a record of its own back in 2013.

We talked about the achievement of the 991.2 GT2 RS earlier today and we're now back on the topic to discuss the record's implications as far as amateur 911 drivers are concerned.

It's not like Neunelfer drivers flogging their machines on the Ring needed any extra reasons to jump for joy and yet the accolade grabbed by the 700 hp rear-wheel-drive special delivered just that.

So yes, the pair of 911 drivers you'll get to see in the clip at the bottom of the page were probably enjoying themselves a bit more knowing that the GT2 RS would become the new king of the Ring - the footage was captured before the German automotive producer made its official announcement, but the rumors about the twin-turbo animal's cronograph performance have been floating around for quite a while.

The Porschephilles we're talking about delivered quite a spectacle, one that involved a 991 incarnation of the GT3 RS chasing a 997.2 generation of the model.

As anybody with a thing for Zuffenhausen machines will notice, the 997 GT3 RS packs a respectable amount of mods. And, as we are told in the description of the video, the machine had undergone a serious tech massage, all with the aim of getting even better at the circuit game.

The list of tech goodies fitted to the Neunelfer includes a serious diet and a sequential gearbox, among others. Alas, the tranny decided to quit its job during the said hot lap, which is why the GT3 RS PDK had to part ways with its sprinting buddy.
