6 Minutes, 47.03 Seconds: 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS Obliterates Nurburgring Record

No worries, though, since this jump has transformed the latest GT RS (992) into the fastest 911 in history both on the road and on the track.

We were telling you last week that Porsche worked on beating the Lamborghini Huracan Performante Nurburgring record, and that the expected time was 6:48.75 minutes according to a guess made by Edo Karabegovic, owner of Edo Competition.

Porsche's own lap time target was “less than 7 minutes and 5 seconds” around the Green Hell, so it's only natural that the 2018 Porsche 911 GT 2 RS beat both the internal target and Edo's estimated time, flying around the famed circuit in a staggering 6 minutes and 47.3 seconds.

There were actually two cars, which both broke the previous record for road-approved sports cars from their first attempt. The two GT2 RS models were driven by Lars Kern and Le Mans veteran Nick Tandy, who actually flew to Germany right after a six-hour race in Austin, Texas for the feat.

Both cars went under 6 minutes and 50 seconds during the five laps that each was driven on the Nordschleife, but it was Lars Kern who ultimately went into the record books to set the fastest time.

“It’s not just the record time achieved by the GT2 RS that demonstrates the vehicle’s class, but also its consistent performance in every lap. We’re particularly proud of the fact that this was achieved with two different vehicles and two different drivers, as this underlines the GT2 RS’s ability to reproduce this record result over and over again,” said Andreas Preuninger, Director of the GT Model Line at Porsche.

Powered by a twin-turbocharged, 3.8-liter flat six with 700 horsepower and 750 Nm (553.2 lb-ft) of torque, the 911 GT2 RS (992) manages to go from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.8 seconds, faster than the missile launches of a 911 Turbo S. All of that despite the car being just rear-driven, not AWD like some its brethren.
