Porsche is getting closer and closer to writing a new chapter in the history of supercars with the 918 Spyder and the carmaker has just made a new step in that direction by releasing the first photos of the pre-production prototypes.
As you can see in the adjacent photos, the vehicle keeps many of the styling cues of the 918 Spyder concept that was presented at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. However, we get new wheels, headlights, “normal” exterior mirrors, as well as a new rear fascia.

There are also special details, such as the the headlights, which exit the car at the top of the engine compartment, while the headlights seem to be borrowed straight from the new 911 (a feature that will certainly be changed on the actual car).

The vehicle aims to redefine our acceptance of “hybrid”, promising to offer a combined output of 770 hp, with an average fuel efficiency of 3.0 liters per 100 km (78.4 mpg). Thus, the car should be able to hit 62 mph from standstill in 3.2 seconds and offer a top speed of over 200 mpg (320 km/h).

The car will use a mid-mounted V8 petrol unit that will have a displacement of over 4.0-liters and over 500 hp, which will send its power to the rear wheels using a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox, while each front wheel will use its own electric motors, with the two units offering a combined output of 218 hp. This tech package will be wrapped in a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic body that will use active aerodynamic elements.

The 918 Spyder will enter production in September 2013, with the first deliveries set to take place by the end of the following year. As for the pricing, Porsche has already announced that the US one will start at $845,000 (EUR655,000 at the current exchange rates), while Europeans will have to pay at least EUR645,000($835,400) for it. However, these prices don’t include taxes.
