This year, Peugeot's lineup of performance vehicles came alive when they introduced the 308 GTi, a direct competitor to the Golf GTI. Now the French are considering more sporty little cars, including one based on the 2008 crossover.
Tall and high-riding, the 2008 doesn't strike you as the ideal base for a sportscar. However, the motorsport boffins know exactly what it takes to make anything go fast, as they proved with the 2008 DKR that competed in this year's edition of the Dakar desert rally.

According to French magazine Auto-Moto, the 2008 GTi has already been seen testing in sunny Spain. But when it debuts in 2016, the hot crossover will only be sold in Asia and South America. Interesting, very interesting!

The power will be provided by the same 1.6-liter turbo engine Peugeot uses on all its hot hatches. However, it will go down from 207 hp in the 208 GTi to just 175 hp. That's still enough to have fun, especially if Peugeot Sport install a set of their big brakes and a short-shift 6-speed gearbox.

Inside, the 2008 GTi will be covered in red and black, the trademark of the lion brand. The sofa front seats will be replaced by figure-hugging buckets covered in Alcantara. The huge trunk will be kept unchanged, which is great if you have a family with kids.

If the hot crossover ever makes it to the European market, the price could be in the region of €28,000. That's a lot. Fortunately, there's no shortage of people who will pay big bucks for small cars.

The biggest rival will be the Nissan Juke. An average version of that car produces 190 horsepower while the Nismo delivers more than 200 hp. Peugeot is playing with one hand tied behind its back, as the 2008 is not compatible with all-wheel drive systems, so all the power needs to go to the front.

Our say: GTi interiors are among the best, and there's nothing bad about a family car with more power.
