Oreo Marshmallow Moon Is a Cookie's Celebration of the Moon Landing 50 Years Ago

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the Moon. It was the culmination of an intensive space exploration program that started in September 1962 with president John F. Kennedy’s historic speech at Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas, and the start of a series of six total Moon landings.
This year, the world marks half a century since that historic moment, and what better way to celebrate than with dedicated cookies?

Arguably the most famous cookies in the world, Oreos are putting on special clothes for the event, so this summer they’ll make their mark on the celebration activities. In summer, Oreo plans the rollout of five new flavors for its insanely delicious cookies, including one meant as a tribute to the Moon landing.

Called Marshmallow Moon, the special edition comes wrapped in glow-in-the-dark packaging complete with anniversary stickers. The cookies themselves will be stamped with three different Moon-themed designs and will be filled with purple marshmallow.

Had NASA known in advance of Oreo’s plans, perhaps they would have tapped them for a possible collaboration for upcoming missions. After all, the agency’s administrator Jim Bridenstine did say last year astronauts should be treated like superheroes, their faces adorning one side of cereal boxes and such.

2019 is a year filled with special events dedicated to the first Moon landing. NASA alone is planning a wide range of events spanning from the end of May and well into next year.

Five years from now, humanity will once again send its representatives to Earth’s satellite, this time including a woman, as part of the program recently baptized Artemis. The name has been chosen to be a nod to the original Apollo program, the Moon itself and women in general.

Separately, the other Oreo flavors coming this summer are S'mores, latte thins, mint chocolate chip and maple crème.
