MPV and diesel engines go together like women's magazines and saving coupons. And Opel's spacious Zafira Tourer MPV has now become a better choice for buyers across Europe who frequently take longer motorway journeys, thanks to a new 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine. It's called the 1.6 CDTI ecoFLEX and it's rated at 120 hp and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of tuque, available for order in Germany at €26,850 (including VAT).
The Zafira Tourer was already available with a 1.6-liter diesel since last year, when a 136 horsepower unit replaced Opel's aging 1.7-liter. However, this de-tuned version with slightly less power is cheaper to buy, but still has more punch than the equivalent Citroen C4 Picasso.

Fuel consumption can be as little as 4.5 l/100km (62.7 mpg UK) on the combined cycle, equivalent to CO2 emissions of 119 grams per kilometer. But that's actually worse than get with the 136 hp version of the Zafira Tourer (4.1 l/100km and 109 g/100km of CO2), while rivals like the C4 Picasso 1.6 e-HDi promise to deliver 4.0 l/100km (73 mpg UK) and CO2 emissions of only 105 g/km. Still the Citroen is down on both power and torque, plus these small differences aren't noticeable in real life.

Both output versions (120 and 136 hp) of the Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTI comply with future Euro 6 emission standards. Their cylinder block, crankshaft bedplate and cylinder head are all made from aluminum, which saves weight. The German company also boasts that its fuel injectors help make this diesel as clean-burning as any petrol engine.

But the reality of this new 120 hp 1.6-liter diesel on the Zafira Tourer is that it's €1,400 cheaper to buy that the 136 hp model. But if it's not the right unit for you, Opel has a wide range of other engines on its seven-seater MPV, including various 2.0-liter diesels offering, 110 hp, 130 hp or 165 hp, as well as the top-of-the-range version which delivers 195 hp.

You can also order a very basic 1.8 petrol with 115 hp, a 1.4 Turbo with either 120 or 140 hp or a 1.6 with 170 hp, from the brand new ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo family.
