It seems like we’ve been waiting forever to get our hand on Opel’s stunning Astra GTC production car. The automaker revealed a concept version of the car at last year’s Paris Auto Show, but we haven’t heard much from it since.
The road-going car will finally make its debut this year at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show in September, but we can show you this little sneak peak of the model’s curvaceous back end in the meantime. This undisguised picture of the Astra GTC comes not from mysterious source, but from a post made on Opel’s official Facebook page just a few hours ago.
So what has changed from the concept we saw in Paris last year? Well, the double exhausts are missing, but we don’t know if this is only a test mule of a production-ready vehicle. As expected, the huge five-spoke alloy wheels of the concept have been replaced by slightly smaller ones, plus the rear diffuser is also missing.
As is the case with most GTC models, what really counts is the beauty within - the engine an powertrain combo. We can tell you that the GTC Paris concept offered a 2.0-liter Turbo equipped with a six-speed manual transmission and packing 290 horsepower, fitted with a Limited Slip Differential and Start/Stop technology. In addition, it came with a compound crank with an Opel-exclusive Watt’s Link in the rear, and a new execution of the adaptive mechatronic FlexRide suspension.
For the latest incarnation the Astra GTC will actually have a range of diesel and petrol engines at its disposal, all improved versions of the units currently on offer on the regular hatchback. We expect this car to be a good match for the Megane and Scirocco when it hits the market.
