More and more aviation operators around the world are gradually integrating the use of SAF (sustainable alternative fuel) into their routine operations as the fastest and most reliable way of cutting CO2 emissions. It takes a great deal of cooperation within the industry, with SAF suppliers playing a key role.
Emirates is approaching the end of the year on a high note, as it was recently crowned "2024 APEX World Class Airline." This prestigious award, together with the 2024 IFSA award for "Best Onboard Amenity," confirms once again the airline's status as one of the global leaders in terms of luxury and passenger comfort.

Still, Emirates is no stranger to the green trend that's slowly turning into a stringent requirement. Like most major airlines, it's working with different ways of lowering emission levels and increasing sustainability, one of them being SAF.

Back in 2017, a Boeing 777 departing from Chicago became the first Emirates-operated aircraft to fly on a blend of SAF and conventional jet fuel. Six years later, it was time for another milestone – Emirates carried out its first demonstration flight powered entirely by alternative fuel. It was a first not just for the airline but for the entire region, highlighting Emirates' pioneering role in this area.

At the moment, the luxury airline has reached a point where it can conduct several flights (from Paris and Lyon in France and Oslo in Norway) using blended SAF. Continuing its pioneering work related to SAF, Emirates is now adding another industry-first to its achievements. For the first time ever, Emirates will have access to an alternative fuel supply in Dubai, and that's thanks to Shell.

The two giants have signed a historic agreement that has the potential to change commercial aviation in the region forever. SAF will be supplied through the DXB (Emirates' International hub in Dubai) airport for the first time. More specifically, the hub is set to receive more than 300,000 gallons (more than 1 million liters) of green fuel from Shell Aviation.

Additionally, Shell Corporate Travel will enable customers to support decarbonizing efforts by opting for SAF-powered flights (book-and-claim solutions). This collaboration is done through Avelia, a blockchain SAFs solution powered by Shell Aviation and Accenture.

The successful results of SAF use depend on large-scale implementation, which is also strictly linked to a high degree of availability. Big names like Shell can play a fundamental role in increasing availability and bringing SAF to all parts of the world.

Last year, Shell announced another major agreement with a renowned operator. Lufthansa Group, claiming to be the largest SAF customer in Europe, announced its intention to purchase a record-breaking quantity of SAF, to be delivered by Shell over seven years, starting next year.
