Nissan is reportedly working on a VW Golf-rival, a car which will be built in the Japanese automaker’s Sunderland plant, in the UK, by the year 2014. The entire work, including design, engineering and the actual building will take place within the confines of the British Isles.
According to Andy Palmer, Nissan’s Executive VP of Product Planning, “There is a gap in our range and the idea of the new car is to keep our customers within the brand [. . .] This will catch buyers moving up from a Juke, who can then buy a Qashqai if they need more space. Eventually, the idea is to get them into an Infiniti.

When asked about the name the new car will bare, Palmer replied that “It won’t use the Almera name, you can be sure of that [. . .] But it will be familiar.” According to reports, the car will be conventionally-powered, by a series of petrol and diesel engines which may be shared with a similar car from within the Renault-Nissan family, the Megane - the car will also get Renault’s new 1.6-liter diesel unit, with 130 hp.

Now for the exciting part. When asked about about wether or not a Nismo version would be a conceivable option for the future offering, Andy Palmer replied “It would be a perfect candidate, don’t you think?” It would be powered by a 1.6-liter engine with some 200 hp, yet it will not be the range topper, as that spot will be occupied by an even hotter model, an ‘RS’ with 230 hp.
