Nissan finds itself in a decent position to challenge the Toyota Camry for leadership right now. Their redesigned 2013 model year Altima has just been revealed in New York at the beginning of this month, and the 2012 model is already closing in on the Camry in the charts.
Nissan has done this without focusing too much on design, instead offering an ever more efficient engine and CVT combo that seems to attract budged buyers. So, what does the future hold for this Japanese automaker?
According to CarandDriver, Nissan is currently working on a new plug-in hybrid system for the next generation Altima hybrid, but also for other such cars it offers in North America.
“Plug-in hybrid technology is a promising path. Clearly we are working on it,” says Pierre Loing, Nissan’s product strategy vice-president.
“Diesel is an open question. In the U.S., diesel is very limited,” Loing elaborated. “Because of fuel cost and availability, as well as government regulations, the case is more difficult here. But still, I’m ready to look at it.”
So, these are the cards Nissan has dealt, and only time will tell if they are indeed right!
