Alongside Tesla, Nissan is one of the early adopters of the electric vehicles. If we are to judge solely on a model vs. model basis, that we can even say the Leaf is historically the world’s best selling EV to date. But unfortunately for Nissan, Leaf is the only star EV it has.
That is about to change, as the carmaker plans to release more and more new electric models in the not so distant future. And the first glimpses of these vehicles are to be seen as of this week at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The home market event is of extreme importance for Nissan, and this is why it chose this place above all others to present a number of concepts for the future, including the Ariya crossover.

Built as a preview of things to come in terms of overall Nissan design language, and possibly as a precursor for a potential production vehicle, the Ariya is obviously electric and all-wheel drive. The exact details of the electric powertrain were not announced.

Visually, the car draws inspiration from the IMx concept that was shown at the same venue, only two years ago, showing sleek lines and a new idea on how distinct elements like the grille, headlamps or tailgate lettering should look like.

The interior is all-digital, with displays reaching for the drive side toward the passenger door. There are no visible buttons or switches, and the overall feel is that we’re dealing with a minimalist, yet elegant approach.

"The Ariya Concept represents a strong collaboration between design and engineering," said in a statement Yasuhiro Yamauchi, representative executive officer, Nissan Motor.

"It is the next stage of Nissan's future design language as we embark on a new era for the company – the next stage in our evolution."

Full details on the Nissan Ariya concept can be found in the press release section below.
