Now that the redesigned 2015 Mustang is out in the open, time has come for Chevrolet Camaro fans to wonder how General Motors will respond to Ford’s new pony.
Details on design, powertrains and technology are scarce to say the least right now, but some renderings that surfaced the web in the past hinted that the bowtie-badged musclecar will stray from the current styling.

A recent report, however, claims that the next-generation Camaro will in fact sport adopt an evolutionary design that “looks like a worked-over current-model Camaro.”

“The difference between the existing and redesigned (Camaro) is not drastically different. It looks like a worked-over current-model Camaro. It is on a different platform, so that is a significant difference, but when they modified it to be on a different platform, the styling did not change that much,” an industry source who has seen the new car told Edmunds.

The platform the unnamed source is talking about is the same rear-wheel drive “chassis” underpinning the new Cadillac ATS and CTS, the report notes, adding that the next-gen Camaro could make its public debut at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show and go on sale for the 2016 model year.

Contacted by Edmunds, Chevrolet spokesman Mike Albano declined going into styling details, but said the 2016 Camaro “will have expressive design and will evoke the passion the previous-generation Camaros have done. Camaro always has kind of moved the heart and the next generation will do the same thing when you see it on the road."

Once the sixth-generation Camaro will be launched, production of the musclecar will move to GM’s Lansing plant in Michigan, where both the Cadillac ATS and CTS are currently assembled. The current Camaro, which was introduced in 2009 and went on sale as a 2010 model, is produced at Oshawa Car Assembly in Ontario, Canada.

The brand new 2015 Ford Mustang, the Camaro’s main rival, will arrive in showrooms in the fourth quarter of the year. The third player in the musclecar market, the Dodge Challenger, will only get a refresh for the 2015 model year, with a completely redesigned car rumored to show up in 2017.
