We were starting to wonder when we’d meet the next-gen Audi Q7 prototype again and our spy photographers have recently encountered the prototype, which is still covered in heavy camouflage.
The second-generation Audi Q7 is due to be released by the end of the year, so the engineers are working overtime to complete the development. What Audi did with the Q7 was basically skip a generation of VW Group SUVs.

While the rest of the lot (VW Cayenne and Porsche Panamera) are currently in their second generation, the Q7 is still offered in its first-gen form. When the new model arrives, it will already ride on the VW Group’s third-generation SUV platform.

The architecture will be shared with the upcoming Bentley SUV, which arrives in 2016, as well as with the Lamborghini SUV, due in 2017. As for the Cayenne and the Touareg, these still have some waiting to do before receiving a new generation.

We are talking about an architecture based on Audi’s MLB platform, with the main benefit set to be a 650 lbs (300 kg) weight reduction. The diet consists of aluminum use for the chassis, perhaps even some composite panels, as well as downsized engines.

Under the hood, the US market is expected to receive Audi’s 3.0-liter supercharged TFSI, as well as the company’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo TFSI V8. The latter will be offered in at least two states of tune and could even span a hot version of the Q7.

Audi has already confirmed it will ofer a plug-in hybrid Q7. The SUV could receive two plug-in hybrid incarnations, one based on the 3.0-liter TFSI and one on the 3.0-liter TDI diesel. Nonetheless, the latter isn’t too likely to land in America. Audi will also offer a TDI Q7 as with the current model. Nonetheless, it is still unclear if the company wants to upgrade its oil burning line-up with the addition of the BiTDI performance diesel twin-turbo 3.0-liter unit.
