Last week we reported that Ford might be dropping the Shelby name in favor of the Cobra moniker for the 2015 Mustang, but a new rumor that surfaced on the web says the “Blue Oval” company has different plans.
According to Mustangs Daily, who are quoting internal company sources, Ford will introduce a Shelby GT350 model in 2016, a year after the next-generation 2015 Mustang is introduced. Unlike the current version offered by Shelby as a post-title package, the S550 platform GT350 will be an official factory “stripped-down performance car”.
In addition, our source also claims that the legendary Mach 1 name is set to return for 2017, and our guess is it will be a special-edition musclecar with both performance and appearance upgrades. The Mach 1 moniker was introduced back in 1969 for the Sportsroof version of the first-generation Mustang. The special edition was discontinued in 1978 when the second-gen pony retired, but came back for a short while in 2003 and 2004.
Info on the upcoming Shelby GT350 and Mach 1 are obviously scarce at the moment, but we’ll be right back as soon as more details surface.
