Despite the fact that not even GM themselves are convinced that EVs are the way to go, and neither is their former boss and 'father' of the Volt, Bob Lutz, but according to their North America President, Mark Reuss, "the electric vehicle is not dead."
Reuss added: "I believe, and we at GM believe, that the public will accept and embrace electric vehicles. Some people already have," and acknowledging the current hurdles faced by EVs, and their road into the mainstream, he adds: "We're talking about a transformation here. And transformation takes time [ . . . ] We will see the day when we have an affordable electric car that offers 300 miles of range with all the comfort and utility of a conventional vehicle."
GM's current attitude to discredit themselves for making an EV si not new. Remember the awesome EV1, which was a very well-engineered electric vehicle built in the mid 1990s, which was recalled and scrapped at the end of its life cycle? Well, they will not go as far with the Volt, but they said pretty much the same things they are saying now, and it didm`t go so well for their image and credibility as a serious automaker.
Still, we hope they have learned from their past mistakes, and Reuss has assured the public that GM will stay committed to EVs in general, and the Volt in particular. Regarding the latter, Reuss announced that the next generation of the extended-range hybrid will be "thousands of dollars cheaper", which is good.
Even the current Volt, is a car which has received a lot of praise, as it is a green car which when driven correctly does deliver on the manufacturer's promise of economy and zero emissions. GM are confident that the next version of the Volt will "sell even more" and "will be even better." - so the next Volt will be cheaper, better and a sales success, if we are to believe them.
