The number of Nissan Leafs facing an acute loss of battery capacity is now approaching 50 (most of which are in Arizona). According to insideevs.com, Nissan has already acquired 6 of the affected EVs for testing purposes, while supplying their owners with replacement cars for the duration of the investigations.
Some say that Nissan is not entirely to blame for the issue, as it is so happens, in fact, it may be the weather. Arizona has been hit by one of the worse heat waves in recorded history, with temperatures soaring much higher than Nissan engineers probably ever envisioned. While owners were expecting a drop in capacity, they weren’t expecting it to be this severe.
The testing of the affected cars begins next week, yet Nissan have not specified a date when the testing will be completed. We also expect the Japanese automaker to offer some form of compensation to the justifiably angry owners, who took a leap of faith by buying their expensive EV in the first place. They should accept no less than lifetime warranty for batteries as well as free servicing thrown in - not much to do there, anyway.
This problem, along with the launch of the Chevrolet Volt have seriously affected the Leaf, which sold just over 500 units last month, and has been surpassed each month by the more conventional GM offering. We hope Nissan figures out a solution fast, because this could spell the end of Leaf sales in hot places like California, Texas, Nevada or Arizona.
