Software issues have plagued Volkswagen as of late. These problems were reported on more than 20,000 units of the ID.3 electric hatchback in December 2019 as well as on the Golf Mk. 8 before it premiered at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.
In the case of the Golf, the German automaker decided to halt the compact hatchback’s deliveries over a different software bug than before. Local media outlets such as Tagesschau.de report the issue lies with the emergency call function of the vehicle, mandated by EU regulations since 2018 on all passenger cars.

eCall is how the European Union refers to it, and this system is mandatory since March 31st, 2018. In the event of a crash that triggers an airbag or more, the vehicle automatically calls the emergency services and transmits valuable information such as the vehicle’s make and model, the location, and the time of the accident.

Tagesschau.de further highlights “a recall is also imminent.” Volkswagen identified the issue during an internal investigation, finding out that certain vehicles relay unreliable data to the control unit of the eCall, meaning that we’re dealing with a compliance case. A software update is expected to fix this problem with an over-the-air rollout between June 15th and June 21st. However, the German company is currently keeping its lips shut about how many cars are affected by this glitch.

If you were wondering why the Golf had two major software problems so far during its existence, the answer to that is the digitalization that sets the Mk. 8 apart from the seventh generation. Even the entry-level trim - known as the Golf, making it the Golf Golf if you can believe it – has touch-sensitive buttons for the exterior lighting system, a digital instrument cluster, plus a touchscreen infotainment system.

The 2020 Volkswagen Golf Golf (!!!) starts at 19,995 euros in Germany, and standard equipment further includes LED headlights, Air Care Climatronic air conditioning with an allergen filter, as well as keyless start/stop. It should be stressed, however, that the 1.0-liter base engine is not exactly sporty.

The three-cylinder motor promises 90 PS (89 horsepower) and front-wheel drive in addition to a five-speed manual transmission. Yes, that’s five forward ratios in an era when most compact cars in Europe get six. On the upside, this engine promises 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers (52.2 U.S. mpg) on the combined driving cycle.
