Oh how the hot hatch market has changed over these odd years. The Golf GTI used to be a three-door, the size of the our current Polo, but it's grown into a luxury mobile with a big engine. Is that a bad thing? Not for Volkswagen, especially since there are plenty of buyers willing to spend top dollar on the best version of the Golf.
The new GTI is headed for Australia next month, but a couple of days ago, the company's Facebook page dropped the bomb, saying only the 5-door will be available. No justification was given, but of course only about $500 will be saved on this $45,000-ish car by buying it as a 3-door instead of a 5-door, so very few people actually will.
Of course, the comments on Facebook are filled with angry messages, some of them about DSG problems. But from a marketing point of view you really can't fault VW, especially when you can buy a 200 hp Scirocco if you want a 3-door.
